Grand Yoff Police arrest three suspects after violent robbery reports

Senegal’s National Police say officers from the Grand Yoff District Commissariat arrested three people, including a woman, on Aug. 14, 2026, following reports of violent robberies allegedly carried out by individuals using motorcycles.

According to the police statement, the suspects were arrested on allegations of criminal association, robbery with violence, use of motorcycles, complicity and possession of suspected stolen property.

Police said officers acted after receiving information about alleged robberies committed by several individuals riding motorcycles. During investigations, officers reportedly found three motorcycles — one Beverly and two Honda SH motorcycles — parked in front of an abandoned house.

Three people found nearby allegedly attempted to flee when they saw the police, but were intercepted. During a security search, officers said they found three mobile phones in the possession of the woman. The phones were seized and placed under seal as part of the investigation.

Police said the motorcycles were also impounded pending efforts to identify their owners.

While taking the suspects to the station, officers reportedly met a security officer who said he had been assaulted moments earlier by two people riding a motorcycle. After being shown the seized phones, the security officer identified an iPhone 11 Pro as his property and allegedly identified two of the suspects as the people who attacked him.

The woman arrested told investigators that she had met the two male suspects in the Léona neighborhood and claimed they had handed her the phones found in her possession.

As part of the investigation into the motorcycles, police said another man later reported that his Beverly motorcycle had been stolen from his home in Castor during the night of Aug. 12 to 13, 2026. He reportedly identified his motorcycle among those discovered in Léona.

The suspects have been placed in police custody while investigations continue.

The case highlights growing public concern over urban robberies involving motorcycles, particularly in densely populated areas of Dakar where mobility, anonymity and quick escape routes can make such crimes difficult to prevent.

Beyond the arrests, the wider challenge is community safety. Police action can disrupt suspected criminal networks, but long-term security also depends on public cooperation, timely reporting, neighborhood vigilance, responsible motorcycle registration and better identification of stolen property.

The National Police said it remains mobilized to protect the public and urged citizens to share useful information through the free hotline 800 00 17 00.

As the investigation continues, the suspects remain entitled to due process and should be presumed innocent unless proven guilty by a competent court.
