MRCG announces strike action, suspends clinical services in Fajara and Keneba

The Medical Research Council Unit The Gambia (MRCG) has announced that clinical services in Fajara and Keneba will be suspended starting 16 December 2024 due to a planned sit-down strike by the MRCG Workers’ Union.

In a press release issued on Saturday, the MRCG expressed its regret over the impending strike and assured the public that efforts are underway to resolve the matter. While recognizing the right of employees to voice their concerns, the organization emphasized its commitment to dialogue with the relevant stakeholders to reach an amicable solution.

The suspension of services is expected to significantly impact the Gambian population, particularly those who rely on MRCG facilities for healthcare. The MRCG has advised participants in ongoing clinical trials to contact their study staff at the respective sites for medical assistance during the strike period.
“We apologise for the inconvenience this may cause to our stakeholders and the communities we serve. We will provide updates on the situation and notify the public when services are set to resume,” the statement added.

The MRCG, an integral part of the London School of Hygiene and Tropical Medicine, has been a vital healthcare and research institution in The Gambia.

However, this disruption underscores the need for dialogue and resolution to maintain its essential services to the community.
