Gambia’s ICC Candidate Advances Campaign Before AU Committee

The Gambia’s candidate for judge of the International Criminal Court, Justice Veronic Wright, has taken another important step in her campaign after appearing before the African Union’s Ministerial Committee on Candidatures in Addis Ababa, Ethiopia.
Justice Wright was presented to the committee on Monday, July 27, 2026, ahead of the ICC judicial elections scheduled to take place in New York in December 2026.
The presentation was led by Ambassador Lang Yabou, Permanent Secretary at the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, International Cooperation and Gambians Abroad. He highlighted Justice Wright’s experience in international criminal law, as well as the integrity, competence and judicial maturity she brings to the role.
Justice Wright is contesting under List A, which covers candidates with established competence in criminal law and procedure. The ICC’s official nomination page confirms her as The Gambia’s nominee under List A and the African States regional group. [2]
In her address, Justice Wright outlined her vision for a stronger, more effective and independent ICC — one that delivers justice for victims of the gravest international crimes while also protecting the fair-trial rights of accused persons.
Her message is significant because the ICC’s credibility depends on both justice and fairness. Victims must see the court as a place where suffering is recognized and accountability pursued. At the same time, accused persons must be assured of due process, impartiality and respect for the rule of law.
The AU committee has since reported to the AU Executive Council, noting the presentation of eight African candidates for the ICC judicial elections.
For The Gambia, Justice Wright’s candidacy represents more than a diplomatic campaign. It is an opportunity for a small country with a strong transitional justice history to contribute to global criminal justice, accountability and institutional integrity.
Her campaign will continue through engagements with States Parties to the Rome Statute in the lead-up to the December elections.
The Gambia is seeking the support of ICC member states as it works to secure Justice Wright’s election to the court.
