Twenty-four high school students from Dakar have taken part in an online preparatory training session ahead of their trip to Japan under the Japan-Africa Youth Program, an international exchange initiative designed to strengthen mutual understanding between young people in Africa and Japan.

The students, drawn from the Senegal-Japan Technical Vocational Training Center and Thierno Saïdou Nourou Tall High School, participated in the online session on Aug. 17 before their scheduled departure to Japan.

They are expected to travel from Aug. 22 to Sept. 3, visiting Tokyo and Tochigi Prefecture as part of a program that will expose them to Japan’s history, advanced technologies, traditional culture and education system.

The Japan-Africa Youth Program was launched during the 9th Tokyo International Conference on African Development, held in Yokohama in August 2025. The initiative aims to promote exchange, dialogue and friendship between African and Japanese youth.

During their stay, the Senegalese students will participate in school exchanges, interact with Japanese high school and university students, and experience homestays with Japanese families.

These activities are expected to give the students a deeper understanding of Japanese society while also allowing them to share Senegalese culture, identity and perspectives with their Japanese counterparts.

The exchange comes at a time when education, technical training and international exposure are becoming increasingly important for young Africans preparing to compete in a global economy.

For students from the Senegal-Japan Technical Vocational Training Center, the visit offers a valuable opportunity to connect classroom learning with Japan’s technological and industrial culture. For students from Thierno Saïdou Nourou Tall High School, the program also opens a window into international cooperation, cultural diplomacy and youth leadership.

Beyond tourism, the program carries a deeper purpose. It allows young people from different continents to meet, learn from one another and build relationships that may influence future cooperation between Senegal, Japan and the wider African continent.

Such exchanges can help students develop confidence, curiosity, intercultural awareness and a sense of global citizenship. They also remind governments and educational institutions that youth diplomacy is an investment in peace, innovation and long-term partnership.

The Japan-Africa Youth Program is expected to strengthen mutual understanding between Japan and Africa while building lasting bonds among the next generation.

For the 24 Senegalese students, the journey represents more than a trip abroad. It is a chance to see new possibilities, return with new ideas and contribute to Senegal’s development through knowledge, discipline and international friendship.
