The Government of The Gambia has confirmed the capture of Sanna Manjang, a former member of the notorious Junglers hit squad implicated in some of the gravest human rights violations committed under ex-President Yahya Jammeh. Manjang, who has been a fugitive since 2017, was arrested in the early hours of Saturday morning, November 29, in the Casamance region of southern Senegal.
According to an official statement from the Ministry of Information, the arrest followed a coordinated security operation between Gambian and Senegalese authorities. The two countries, described as “sister nations,” have reportedly intensified collaboration in recent months to track down Manjang, long considered one of the most elusive figures linked to the former regime’s abuses.
Manjang was prominently named in the findings of The Gambia’s Truth, Reconciliation and Reparations Commission (TRRC), which cited him as a central actor in torture, enforced disappearances, and extrajudicial killings carried out by the Junglers. His arrest marks what the government calls “a significant step in the ongoing pursuit of justice and accountability” for victims of the Jammeh era.
The government further assured the public that arrangements are being finalized for Manjang’s repatriation to Banjul, where he is expected to face justice in accordance with Gambian law.
Authorities say the public will be kept informed as the process advances, underscoring that the stability, peace, and security of the nation “will never be compromised.”
The government concluded by reaffirming its firm commitment to ensuring justice, accountability, and the protection of all persons within the country. It also expressed appreciation to the Government of Senegal for its “continued cooperation and solidarity” in matters of regional security.
