Senegal celebrates centenary of former President Wade

Former President Abdoulaye Wade turns 100 years old today, marking a historic milestone in the life of one of Senegal’s most influential political figures. President Wade, who served the country for over two decades, is older than the Republic of Senegal itself, which is celebrating fewer than sixty years of independence.

In a message commemorating the centenary, current President Bassirou Diomaye Faye highlighted the enduring legacy of Wade, recalling that he witnessed the birth of the nation and played a pivotal role in its development. “The Republic of Senegal, she, is not yet sixty — and discovers that she is younger than the man whose life is mistaken for her own. He saw her born, and he helped grow her,” President Faye said.

The President extended heartfelt wishes to Wade on behalf of the nation, praying for continued health, peace, and serenity. “On behalf of the entire Nation, I wish President Abdoulaye Wade a centenary of peace, serenity and light, and I pray to God to keep him for a long time. Thank you, President Wade,” Faye added.

Abdoulaye Wade’s centenary serves as a moment for Senegalese citizens to reflect on the country’s political history, development achievements, and the enduring influence of its leaders. Wade’s long life has been intertwined with Senegal’s modern history, from the post-independence era to the current democratic landscape.

The centenary celebrations are expected to include public acknowledgments from government officials, civic organizations, and political leaders who recognize Wade’s contributions to the nation’s governance, political development, and international standing.

This milestone underscores both personal longevity and the enduring narrative of Senegal’s national journey, offering citizens an opportunity to celebrate the life of a leader whose career has shaped the country in profound ways.
