In a landmark move to boost the efficiency and professionalism of The Gambia Police Force (GPF), Inspector General of Police (IGP) Seedy Mukhtar Touray concluded a productive week-long working visit to the Rwanda National Police (RNP) on December 7, 2024.
The visit, which highlighted international collaboration, resulted in a pivotal Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) to enhance security cooperation and capacity-building between the two forces.
During the trip, IGP Touray engaged in strategic discussions with Rwandan Minister of Interior and Commissioner-General Felix Namuhoranye, who also serves as Rwanda’s IGP. The MoU provides for training opportunities at the Rwanda National Police College, enabling GPF officers to pursue master’s degrees to advance their skills.
The Gambian delegation explored several RNP facilities, including the basic policing academy in Gishari, where they observed advanced training programs aimed at producing high-caliber police personnel. They also toured the RNP Uniform Factory, which ensures officers are equipped with quality uniforms to enhance their professional image and operational readiness.
Highlighting Rwanda’s advanced infrastructure, IGP Touray’s delegation visited the Counterterrorism Training Centre and the Automated Driving Testing and Licensing Centre. A significant stop at the La Corniche One-Stop Border Post demonstrated Rwanda’s cutting-edge approach to border security and management.
Expressing his vision for the GPF, IGP Touray emphasized the importance of international partnerships in modern policing:
“This collaboration with the Rwanda National Police is a strategic step in our pursuit of professionalism, innovation, and excellence in service to the Gambian nation.”
This visit cements IGP Touray’s commitment to transforming the GPF into a modern, efficient force by learning from Rwanda’s policing successes and adopting best practices.
