Angelic Isatou Mendy has etched her name in history as the first female recipient of the prestigious Gambia National Teachers Award 2025. The award, organized by the Namie Foundation in collaboration with the Ministry of Basic and Secondary Education, honors outstanding educators for their dedication and contributions to the nation’s education sector.
Mendy, a teacher at Pakalinding Upper Basic School in the Lower River Region, was recognized for her unwavering commitment to shaping young minds. In an emotional acceptance speech, she expressed her gratitude and dedicated the award to her “girl,” highlighting the deep personal impact of her teaching journey. She also used the platform to commend her fellow educators for their resilience and dedication to molding the future of Gambian youth.
As the national winner, Mendy was awarded D100,000, while eight regional winners each received D50,000, along with scholarships to pursue further education at any university in The Gambia. These teachers were also honored with certificates of recognition for their exceptional service in advancing education.
The 2025 edition of the Gambia National Teachers Award underscores the invaluable role of teachers in national development, celebrating their unwavering efforts in fostering academic excellence across the country.
