In a landmark effort to combat food affordability challenges, Yonna Forex Bureau has announced the importation of over 14,500 metric tons of 100% broken rice from India. The monumental consignment, consisting of nearly 600 containers or 290,000 50-kilogram bags, will be sold at competitive prices through Yonna outlets nationwide.
Speaking during a press conference on Wednesday, Modou Lamin Fatty, Head of Marketing at Yonna Group, described the initiative as a game-changer for Gambian households.
“Yonna Group—proudly Gambian and employing over 500 citizens—is thrilled to announce the arrival of our largest rice consignment at the Banjul Ports. We have just received over 14,500 metric tons of 100% broken rice from India—nearly 600 containers or 290,000 bags (50kg each). This historic shipment guarantees Gambians abundant access to premium-quality, affordable rice. Our commitment to high standards remains unwavering,” he stated.
Yonna Group underscored its dedication to ensuring affordability by setting wholesale prices at D1,950 in the Kombos and retailing at D2,000. In the provinces, the retail price is D2,050, with a nominal D50 added to cover logistics. Additionally, the company absorbs loading, offloading, and transport costs to ease financial pressures on customers.
Senegambia Times correspondent gathered that this initiative aligns with Yonna Group’s mission to support Gambians by providing high-quality essentials at reasonable prices. The move has been praised as a significant step towards addressing the country’s food security challenges while strengthening the local economy.
