The U.S. Embassy in Banjul has announced the departure of Chargé d’Affaires Eugene S. Young, who has concluded his assignment in Gambia and will retire after nearly four decades of service to the United States and the U.S. Foreign Service.

Young served as the senior U.S. diplomatic representative in Gambia, leading the embassy’s efforts to strengthen relations between the United States and Gambia.

During his tenure, the embassy advanced cooperation in public health, security partnerships, the McGovern-Dole International Food for Education and Child Nutrition Program, and the expansion of American commercial interests in the country.

The embassy said Young also deepened collaboration with the Gambian government, the diplomatic and consular community, civil society and the private sector. Those efforts, according to the embassy, helped strengthen the long-standing friendship between the two countries and advance a partnership rooted in mutual respect, shared values and common purpose.

Young’s departure closes an important chapter in U.S.-Gambia diplomatic engagement. His assignment in Banjul came during a period of continued cooperation in health, education, security, development and economic partnership.

The embassy expressed gratitude to Young for his “exemplary leadership, steadfast dedication, and the lasting contributions he has made to the U.S.-Gambia relationship.”

As Young prepares for retirement, the embassy said the work carried out under his leadership will remain part of the broader foundation for continued cooperation between Washington and Banjul.
