The Embassy of Japan in Senegal has reminded eligible students from Senegal, Cabo Verde, The Gambia and Guinea-Bissau that the deadline for the 2027 Japanese Government Scholarships is fast approaching.
According to the embassy, applications for the scholarship program must be submitted by Monday, June 1, 2026.
The scholarship program is offered by Japan’s Ministry of Education, Culture, Sports, Science and Technology, widely known as MEXT, and is designed to support international students who wish to continue their studies in Japan.
The Embassy of Japan said it has already organized 11 briefing sessions at the embassy, in educational institutions across Dakar, and online. About 700 people have participated in the sessions, reflecting strong regional interest in studying in Japan.
The embassy said it is looking forward to receiving applications from qualified candidates before the deadline.
For Senegalese and Cabo Verdean applicants, the scholarship opportunities cover research studies for bachelor’s or master’s degree holders, university studies for high school diploma holders, technology studies, and professional training.
For applicants from The Gambia and Guinea-Bissau, the available category is research studies for bachelor’s or master’s degree holders.
The program offers a major opportunity for young people in the subregion to access higher education, research training, technology exposure, and professional development in Japan. It also strengthens educational and cultural cooperation between Japan and West African countries.
For many students, scholarships such as MEXT can open doors to advanced learning, global networks, scientific research, innovation, and future leadership. For the participating countries, the program can help build human capital in areas that support national development, including science, engineering, technology, education, public administration, and professional skills.
The embassy encouraged interested candidates to consult the detailed application guidelines and submit their documents before the deadline.
Applications and inquiries can be directed to the Embassy of Japan in Senegal through the cultural affairs email: culture-sn@dk.mofa.go.jp.
The embassy also invited the public to follow the Regional English Language Office – West Africa and its official platforms for more educational opportunities.
As the June 1 deadline approaches, eligible candidates from Senegal, Cabo Verde, The Gambia and Guinea-Bissau are being encouraged to act quickly, review the requirements carefully, and submit complete applications on time.
The call is not only an academic opportunity. It is also a bridge for youth empowerment, international cooperation, and future development across the Senegambia region and beyond.
