Pikine Police arrest robbery suspect, uncover drug trafficking network

Police in Senegal’s Pikine District have arrested a robbery suspect and dismantled a suspected drug trafficking operation following an early morning attack near the Alassane Djigo Stadium, authorities confirmed on Wednesday.

According to the National Police, the suspect was apprehended around 6:00 a.m. on January 14, 2026, after allegedly taking part in a violent robbery committed with the use of bladed weapons. The incident occurred at approximately 5:00 a.m. as the victim was on his way to work. He was reportedly ambushed near the stadium by a group of assailants armed with knives, who forcefully snatched his bag containing personal belongings before fleeing the scene.

The attack drew the attention of nearby residents, who responded to the victim’s cries for help and gave chase. During the pursuit, the group scattered. One of the suspected attackers attempted to escape by climbing the stadium wall but was intercepted by members of the public and handed over to police officers.

Brought to the police station for questioning, the suspect initially denied involvement. However, a subsequent search of his residence later that afternoon led to a significant discovery. Police said officers recovered approximately 1.2 kilograms of loose Indian hemp along with 56 pre-packaged sachets believed to be intended for sale.

Other occupants of the residence were taken into custody to assist with the investigation. Authorities said further inquiries not only led to the identification of the remaining robbery suspects but also resulted in the dismantling of a drug trafficking network operating from the premises.

The Senegalese National Police reiterated their commitment to public safety and urged citizens to cooperate with law enforcement by reporting suspicious activities. Members of the public are encouraged to contact the police toll-free hotline at 800 00 17 00 with any useful information.
