Armed Forces Day Marked with Pride as President Faye Honors Senegal’s Military

Dakar, Senegal — Senegal on today commemorated Armed Forces Day, a national occasion dedicated to honoring the men and women who safeguard the republic, defend its sovereignty, and serve with unwavering discipline both at home and across international peacekeeping missions.

The ceremony, held in Dakar with military parades, flag-raising, and tributes to fallen soldiers, brought together senior government officials, military leaders, foreign dignitaries, and citizens who gathered to celebrate the nation’s “Jambaars” — a proud Wolof term honoring Senegal’s warriors.

President Bassirou Diomaye Faye, presiding over his first Armed Forces Day since assuming office, delivered a powerful message recognizing the bravery and loyalty of Senegal’s defense forces.

“Our Armed Forces are the beating heart of our sovereignty, the cement of our unity, and the vigilant conscience of the Nation,” President Faye declared. “On this Armed Forces Day, I honor their loyalty, discipline, and sacrifice in service to Senegal. Eternal pride and gratitude to our Jambaars.”

The president also reaffirmed Senegal’s commitment to strengthening national security, modernizing military resources, and supporting families of service members. He praised the sacrifices of soldiers currently deployed in international missions, especially under United Nations and ECOWAS peacekeeping operations, where Senegal remains one of the most respected contributors.

Military officials highlighted the progress made in border integrity, counterterrorism efforts in the Sahel region, disaster response missions, and continued cooperation with regional allies in defense and peacebuilding.

In various parts of the country, schools, civic groups, and veterans’ associations organized educational programs and remembrance activities. Wreaths were laid at military cemeteries to honor soldiers who lost their lives protecting the nation.

Citizens also took to social media with messages of unity and gratitude, many echoing the President’s words and sharing stories of relatives who served in the Armed Forces. The phrase “Fier de nos Jambaars” — Proud of our warriors — trended across Senegalese platforms.

As the day concluded, the government reiterated that the Armed Forces would continue to receive state support to ensure readiness, welfare, and dignity. President Faye’s message emphasized that the nation’s stability and democracy rest firmly on the shoulders of the men and women in uniform.

The commemoration once again underscored the deep respect Senegalese society holds for its military — a symbol of discipline, patriotism, and national pride.
