China strengthens ties with Gambia via strategic aid in food security, healthcare

The Gambia has received a substantial boost to its food security and healthcare sectors through a generous donation from the People’s Republic of China.

The aid package includes rice worth 10 million RMB Yuan (approximately 98.65 million Dalasis) and medical equipment valued at $1 million (72 million Dalasis), underscoring China’s commitment to supporting development in partner nations under its South-South Cooperation initiative.

The rice, a key component of the donation, will be distributed to vulnerable communities across the country, helping to alleviate food insecurity. On the healthcare front, the donation comprises four medicalized ambulances and essential medical equipment to strengthen The Gambia’s healthcare system, advancing the government’s efforts toward achieving universal health coverage.

At the handover ceremony, President Adama Barrow commended the bilateral cooperation between The Gambia and China. He highlighted the critical role of the aid in addressing pressing national challenges.

“These donations will go a long way in accelerating the Government’s efforts towards universal health coverage,” the president remarked.

Chinese Ambassador H.E. Liu Jin reaffirmed China’s dedication to deepening relations with The Gambia, pledging further support through health professional deployments and exchange programs for Gambian youth.

“China will send more health professionals to the country to strengthen the health system. We encourage young Gambians to visit China through our exchange programmes to enhance mutual understanding and friendship,” Ambassador Liu stated.

The ceremony brought together high-ranking officials, including Health Minister Dr. Amadou Lamin Samateh, Agriculture Minister Dr. Demba Sabally, and Chief of Staff Mod. K. Ceesay, among others.

This latest donation is a testament to the growing partnership between The Gambia and China, addressing urgent needs in food and healthcare while fostering long-term collaboration through capacity-building and knowledge-sharing initiatives. It highlights the mutual commitment to sustainable development and a shared vision for prosperity.
