Gambia: REFELA Celebrates Fruitful Outcome of Women Empowerment Initiative in Banjulinding

Just seven months after the launch of a transformative women empowerment initiative, the Network for Locally Elected Women of Africa (REFELA), with support from the Austrian Government, is already witnessing the fruits of its vision—literally.

The initiative, unveiled in Banjulinding with much fanfare, saw the installation of a comprehensive water supply system fitted with boreholes, multiple tanks, garden reservoirs, and a standard pipe network across the Banjulinding Women’s Garden. The project aimed at empowering hundreds of women gardeners directly and thousands of Gambians indirectly.

“The event marked a historic moment for the people of Banjulinding and its surroundings with the aim of benefiting hundreds of women gardeners directly and indirectly thousands of Gambians,” the REFELA representative shared.

Present at the launch was the Mayor of West Coast Region, Yankuba Darboe, whose presence underscored the importance of the initiative to the region.

Today, the promise of that day has started to bloom—literally. REFELA leadership was presented with token harvests from the garden, marking a significant milestone in the project’s success.

“Today, a manifestation of the great vision we shared with the women of Banjulinding, I was presented with token harvests from the garden; an indication of what can happen when we empower our women,” said the REFELA leader.

“Under my leadership, I continue to believe we can uplift our women from poverty and dependence. REFELA believes that the provision of requisite infrastructure and capacity is the answer to poverty reduction and women empowerment,” the leader added, highlighting the enduring commitment to change.

REFELA extended heartfelt appreciation to the Austrian Government for its crucial role in bringing the project to life. “We continue to thank our partners, who share in our vision. In this instance we send special gratitude to the government of Austria through the Ambassador of Austria to Senegal and The Gambia and Her Excellency’s Honorary Consul. This would have been impossible without your support.”

The initiative stands as a testament to what strategic support and shared vision can accomplish, marking another milestone for women in The Gambia.

“Another milestone reached for our women; A giant step taken for the future.”
