The Ministry of Tourism, Arts and Culture (MOTAC) has announced a temporary suspension of all new land applications within the Tourism Development Area (TDA).
This decision, issued to the Gambia Tourism Board (GTBoard), aims to allow for a comprehensive audit of land within the TDA to ensure transparency, clarity, and efficiency in land management processes.
According to a press release dated January 23, 2025, the audit will assess the current status of land allocations in the TDA and aims to bring order to the process of land application, approval, and use for tourism-related development. The Ministry emphasized that this initiative aligns with global best practices and seeks to create a seamless and predictable framework for land transactions in the TDA
.
While the suspension is in effect, the Ministry clarified that exceptions may be made in certain cases.
“Each case will be assessed on its individual merits,” the release noted, highlighting a balanced approach to the temporary measure. MOTAC also outlined a clear process for addressing any grievances related to decisions made by the GTBoard.
Individuals dissatisfied with actions or decisions by GTBoard management can escalate their concerns to the GTBoard Governing Body through the Chairperson. If grievances persist after engaging the Governing Body, appeals can be made directly to the Honourable Minister of Tourism, Arts and Culture.
The ministry reassured stakeholders that these measures aim to enhance the efficiency and accountability of land transactions while promoting sustainable tourism development in The Gambia.
MOTAC encourages inquiries and feedback, reiterating its commitment to fostering robust tourism growth in “The Smiling Coast of Africa.”
