Back-Way Lives Matter: Mayor Malick-Lowe Backs Movement to End Irregular Migration in Gambia

The Mayor of Banjul, Rohey Malick-Lowe has thrown her weight behind a new initiative aimed at tackling the growing crisis of irregular migration among Gambian youth, as she attended the official inauguration of the Back-Way Lives Matter movement.

“Honored to be invited by the executive of the BACK-WAY LIVES MATTER to witness the INAUGURATION of the movement,” Malick-Lowe said.

The newly launched movement seeks to prevent young Gambians from embarking on the perilous journey of illegal migration through intense nationwide sensitization campaigns. “The objective of the movement is to see that our youths don’t embark on the illegal/ irregular migration through an aggressive sensitization throughout the Gambia,” she noted.

The inauguration was both emotional and inspiring, as victims—particularly women—shared their firsthand experiences of what the Mayor described as a traumatic ordeal. “It was sad to listen to the narration of the victims especially women who were brave enough to explain what they went through on what I call the deadly journey,” she said.

The mayor praised the efforts of the organizers and lauded the turnout at the event. “It was well attended and I want to thank the organizers for a well-organized event and my sincere congratulations to the members of the movement especially the executive, who invited me. Thank you for being there for our youth,” she added.

The Back-Way Lives Matter movement is expected to play a critical role in shifting mindsets and informing communities about the dangers of irregular migration, while offering safer alternatives and hope for the future.
