President Barrow receives Media Freedom Award

In a landmark event celebrating press freedom and media development, President Adama Barrow was honored with the Media Freedom Award by Star TV as he presided over the grand inauguration of its headquarters.

The award was presented by the Chairman and proprietor of Star TV, Haji Baniko Sissoho, at the newly unveiled Star FM and TV Headquarters located along the OIC Highway on Monday.

The new facility is a significant step towards strengthening information dissemination, freedom of expression, and national development in The Gambia. While launching the new media house, President Barrow emphasized the crucial role of the media in fostering democracy, accountability, and national unity.

In his address, President Barrow commended Star FM and TV for its contribution to the Gambian media landscape, noting its role in providing diverse platforms for discourse, creating job opportunities, and fostering national dialogue. He further encouraged the management and staff to uphold ethical journalism, embrace new technologies, and expand their reach to better serve the public.

Reflecting on his administration’s commitment to press freedom, the President stated:

“Since 2017, my administration has prioritised the creation of an open and thriving media environment. The enactment of the Access to Information Act, under my leadership, clearly demonstrates our dedication to media freedom, transparency, and good governance.”

He reaffirmed the importance of a strong and independent media sector as a pillar of democracy, pledging continued government support for press freedom.

“A strong and independent media sector is an essential pillar of democracy, so we will continue to support initiatives that empower the press to operate freely, fairly, and beneficially.”

President Barrow underscored the media’s power in informing, educating, and uniting citizens while promoting accountability and civic participation. He lauded Star FM and TV for its dedication to journalistic excellence and public service, calling on the institution to maintain its high standards and remain a beacon of truth and integrity in Gambian journalism.

“The role of the media in nation-building cannot be overstated. Media outlets inform, educate, entertain, and have a huge and unique potential to unite a nation while fostering accountability and civic participation.”

With the launch of its new headquarters, Star FM and TV is set to expand its impact, strengthen its operations, and continue its mission of delivering quality news and entertainment to the Gambian public.

The event marks yet another milestone in The Gambia’s commitment to media freedom, press development, and democratic governance, reinforcing the nation’s position as a growing hub for independent journalism in West Africa.
