In a significant breakthrough for rural security and community protection, the Urban Security Unit of the Central Police Station in Kaolack has dismantled an organized cattle theft network operating between Koutal and Keur Madiabel, leading to the arrest of three individuals and the recovery of stolen livestock.
The operation, conducted through coordinated intelligence and field interventions between March 28 and April 29, 2026, highlights ongoing efforts by law enforcement to combat livestock theft—a crime that continues to threaten the livelihoods of farmers and pastoral communities across the region.
The first major breakthrough came in the early hours of March 28, when officers stationed at the Pont Noirot checkpoint intercepted a Peugeot vehicle traveling from Koutal. A search of the vehicle revealed six sheep tightly bound and concealed in the rear compartment, suggesting an attempt to evade detection. The suspects attempted to flee on foot but were apprehended after a brief pursuit.
During questioning, the individuals reportedly confessed to stealing the animals from Keur Madiabel. Authorities have since identified the rightful owner, who has been invited to the police station for recovery of the livestock in accordance with due legal procedures.
Building on this lead, investigators traced the group’s operations to a suspected rear base located in a bush area on the outskirts of Keur Madiabel. On April 29, a targeted raid was conducted at an isolated livestock enclosure believed to be linked to the network. Upon arrival, several individuals attempted to flee, but one suspect—allegedly a key accomplice responsible for logistics—was successfully apprehended.
At the site, officers discovered and seized twenty goats suspected to be stolen. The animals have been secured as part of the ongoing investigation, with efforts underway to identify their rightful owners.
All three suspects are currently in police custody and are being prosecuted for criminal association, night-time cattle theft using transport means, and related offenses. Authorities indicate that investigations are continuing to determine whether additional individuals are involved and to dismantle any remaining elements of the network.
This operation reflects a broader commitment by Senegal’s National Police to safeguard rural economies and reinforce trust between communities and law enforcement. By disrupting organized theft networks and recovering stolen property, authorities aim not only to enforce the law but also to restore confidence among livestock owners whose livelihoods depend on security and stability.
The Police have reiterated their call for public cooperation, urging citizens to report suspicious activities through the toll-free number 800 00 17 00, as collective vigilance remains a key pillar in preventing crime and protecting communities.
