Senegalese Gendarmes Arrest Two Robbery Suspects in Gambia After 176 Million CFA Heist

The elite Colobane Research Section of the Senegalese Gendarmerie has arrested two suspects linked to a high-profile robbery in Ouakam, Dakar, where a cambiste was ambushed and robbed of a staggering 176 million CFA francs.

The operation, executed in collaboration with Interpol and Gambian authorities, marks a significant stride in regional anti-crime efforts.

According to a report, the four-man gang—comprising three Senegalese nationals and one Gambian—devised a scheme to lure the victim into a fake currency exchange deal. When the cambiste arrived at the designated meeting spot, he was violently attacked and stripped of the massive cash sum. The assailants had rented an apartment in Ouakam in preparation for the heist and disappeared shortly after executing the crime.

The Colobane Research Section, known for its skill in dismantling sophisticated criminal networks, launched an intensive investigation. Leveraging advanced tracking technology, the unit traced the suspects to neighboring Gambia. With the help of Interpol, all four suspects were initially apprehended, but only two Senegalese nationals were handed over to Senegalese authorities by Gambian officials.

The transferred suspects were held overnight on Wednesday at the Kaolack Legion before being moved to the Colobane Research Section via the Thiès Legion on Thursday.

The Directorate of Air and Borders Police (DPAF) has taken over the case as the hunt for the remaining two fugitives continues, along with efforts to recover the stolen funds.

A source within the Senegalese Gendarmerie emphasized the force’s determination to bring all culprits to justice: “Any perpetrator of a criminal act will be pursued relentlessly, no matter where they hide,” the source told Seneweb News.

The bold robbery is the second of its kind in the Ouakam area in recent times. Just weeks earlier, a gang led by Souleymane Ba targeted a motorcyclist, making away with 100 million CFA francs, raising alarm over a possible surge in organized crime within the district.

As the investigation unfolds, Senegalese security forces continue to reinforce their cross-border cooperation and technological surveillance capabilities, sending a strong message to criminal syndicates operating in the region.
