President Barrow welcomes new ambassadors, high commissioner, strengthens diplomatic ties

In a significant diplomatic event at the Statehouse in Banjul, President Adama Barrow received the Letters of Credence from the Ambassadors of the European Union (EU) and the Slovak Republic, H.E. Immaculada Roca I. Cortes and H.E. Thomas Felix, as well as the High Commissioner of the Republic of Sierra Leone, H.E. Martha C. Kanagbo.

President Barrow extended a warm welcome to the newly appointed diplomats, expressing optimism about the strengthening of relationships between The Gambia and their respective countries.

“I look forward to enhanced cooperation and the advancement of mutual interests during your tenure,” the President remarked during the ceremony.

H.E. Immaculada Roca I. Cortes, the EU Ambassador, was the first to present her credentials. She underscored the EU’s pivotal role in The Gambia’s Transitional Justice Programme and Security Sector Reform. “The EU remains committed to supporting The Gambia’s democratic process and socio-economic development,” Ambassador Roca stated. The discussion also touched on irregular migration, with President Barrow emphasizing the need to develop strategies to manage it effectively.

In a separate meeting, Ambassador Thomas Felix of Slovakia discussed with President Barrow the importance of revitalizing The Gambia’s agricultural sector. They agreed to prioritize investments that promote youth employment and further the Security Sector Reform. Ambassador Felix pledged Slovakia’s support in achieving these goals.

High Commissioner Martha C. Kanagbo of Sierra Leone assured President Barrow of Sierra Leone’s unwavering support for The Gambia. She highlighted the historical and cultural ties between the two nations and pledged to deepen collaboration across various sectors.

The ceremony marks a step forward in The Gambia’s diplomatic engagements, with the new envoys signaling their commitment to fostering stronger partnerships and supporting key national priorities.
