In a significant move to strengthen the Gambia Armed Forces (GAF), President Adama Barrow has handed over five buses and five tractors to the military at the State House.
The donation, aligned with the National Development Agenda, aims to enhance GAF’s transportation system while supporting its agricultural initiatives for food security and self-sufficiency.
Speaking at the handover ceremony, President Barrow reaffirmed his government’s dedication to improving security sector resources.
“We are committed to strengthening the human resources of the security sector, which is a crucial part of our National Development Plan and the YIRIWA initiative. Creating a more conducive and convenient work environment is essential for transforming the security sector in line with democratic values,” he stated.
The newly acquired buses are expected to improve the punctuality of security personnel, while the tractors will empower GAF’s farming programs to ensure sustainable food production.
This initiative reflects the government’s broader efforts to promote peace, security, and economic stability.
Chief of Defence Staff (CDS) Lieutenant General Mamat O.A. Cham lauded the President’s intervention, emphasizing its impact on both operational efficiency and morale within the armed forces.
“This remarkable intervention serves as a beacon for punctuality and will undoubtedly boost the morale of our personnel. These machines will enhance productivity and efficiency in our farming practices,” he said.
CDS Cham further expressed gratitude for President Barrow’s continued support for the security sector, affirming GAF’s dedication to food security.
“We remain committed to playing a significant role in meeting the food and nutritional requirements of our personnel and their families while also contributing to the country’s needs as our capacity grows,” he added.
The donation underscores the Gambian government’s vision of a well-equipped security sector that not only ensures national safety but also contributes meaningfully to the country’s development through agriculture and self-sufficiency.
