The Ministry of Higher Education, Research, Science and Technology (MoHERST) has outlined its forward-looking 2025 roadmap following a successful 5-day retreat that concluded on February 14th, 2024, in Kanilai, West Coast Region.
This event, which brought together key higher education leaders and staff, centered on the “Key Performance Indicators framework” aimed at boosting operational efficiency and service delivery across the sector.
In his closing address, Honourable Minister of Higher Education, Professor Pierre Gomez, commended the active engagement of all participants and underscored the significance of the retreat in shaping the future of higher education in The Gambia.
He announced plans for another retreat in May 2025, a continuation of the ministry’s commitment to progress and enhanced service.
Professor Gomez also discussed the ongoing transformation of the sector, emphasizing the importance of visible and impactful changes. He reassured participants of the Ministry’s unwavering support in meeting the objectives of the higher education transformation agenda.
A key highlight of the retreat was the progress of three critical MoHERST Bills currently under review by the National Assembly—the Student Loan Scheme, the Tertiary and Higher Education Trust Fund (T&HE), and the National Research and Innovation Fund. With stakeholder consultations underway, the Ministry remains hopeful that these bills will soon move to the next stage of legislation.
Looking forward, the Minister urged all attendees to focus on executing the strategic mechanisms identified during the retreat, setting the stage for significant advancements in The Gambia’s higher education sector.
