Madame Mariame SY has been nominated as Senegal’s extraordinary and plenipotentiary ambassador to The Gambia, a groundbreaking appointment that, if accepted by Gambian President Adama Barrow, will make her the first woman to hold this prestigious position.
The announcement came as part of a diplomatic reshuffle unveiled by Senegalese President Bassirou Diomaye Faye during a Council of Ministers meeting in Dakar. Madame SY will succeed Monsieur Bassirou SENE, who is retiring after years of service and will now receive his pension.
Madame SY brings a wealth of experience to the role, having served as a principal adviser at Senegal’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs. Her most recent position was as Senegalese Ambassador to Spain, where she earned accolades for her diplomatic skills and dedication.
This historic nomination is being celebrated as a step forward for gender representation in Senegal’s diplomatic corps. If confirmed, Madame SY will oversee the strengthening of bilateral ties between Senegal and The Gambia, two nations bound by shared history, culture, and economic cooperation.
