Police in Grand-Yoff have detained a local basketball coach following allegations of sexual assault involving an 11-year-old girl, authorities confirmed.
The arrest, carried out on March 17, 2026, by the Grand-Yoff Borough Commissioner, follows a formal complaint filed on March 12 by the victim’s parents. The child, a sixth-grade student and member of the coach’s basketball club, reportedly disclosed the alleged abuse after concerns were raised by third parties.
Allegations Linked to Sports Tournament
According to preliminary findings, the alleged incidents occurred during a basketball tournament held in Mbour in September 2025. Investigators say the victim, heard in the presence of her guardians, described being compelled to spend multiple nights in the coach’s tent during the event.
She further alleged that the suspect abused her on at least five occasions, reportedly exploiting his position of authority and trust.
Suspect Denies Assault
During questioning, the suspect acknowledged that the minor had stayed in his tent and that he had provided her with food. However, he denied any form of sexual misconduct.
Despite the denial, law enforcement officials indicate that testimonies and elements gathered during the investigation prompted his placement in custody as inquiries continue.
Safeguarding Children in Community Sports
The case has raised renewed concerns about child protection within youth sports environments, where trust and supervision are critical. Experts emphasize the need for stronger safeguarding protocols, including:
* Background checks for coaches and staff
* Clear supervision policies during trips and tournaments
* Safe reporting channels for children and parents
* Mandatory child protection training for sports personnel
Police Call for Public Cooperation
Authorities say investigations are ongoing to establish the full circumstances of the case and to determine appropriate legal action.
The Senegalese police have reiterated their commitment to public safety and urged citizens to report any relevant information through the toll-free number 800 00 17 00.
While the case remains under investigation, it underscores the urgent need for stronger institutional safeguards to protect minors in extracurricular settings. Community leaders, sports organizations, and policymakers are increasingly called upon to ensure that youth development spaces remain safe, accountable, and child-centered.
