The Gambia Police Force (GPF) on Tuesday, January 13, 2026, carried out a sensitization programme at Gambia Senior Secondary School as part of its ongoing efforts to strengthen police–community relations and promote crime prevention among young people.
The programme, jointly organized by the Community Policing Unit, the Gender and Child Protection Unit, and the Prosecutions and Legal Affairs Unit, focused on educating students about their rights and responsibilities while discouraging involvement in crime and other harmful behaviors.
Inspector Alieu Gaye of the Community Policing Unit opened the session with an introductory presentation on the principles of community policing. He emphasized the importance of collaboration between the police and the public, noting that students play a vital role in providing timely information that can support effective police response. According to him, trust, inclusivity, and partnership are key to building strong police–community relations and ensuring a safe learning environment.
Addressing the students, Sergeant Bojang of the Gender and Child Protection Unit spoke on the relationship between cultural practices, traditions, and the law. He urged students to report cases requiring legal intervention through the GPF hotline 1313, stressing that early reporting enables appropriate action and protection for victims.
Chief Superintendent of Police Mariama Jallow cautioned students against negative peer influence, describing it as a major factor contributing to criminal behavior among young people. She encouraged students to break the culture of silence by reporting crimes and suspicious activities, emphasizing that speaking up can prevent further harm.
In his remarks, Commissioner of Police Almameh James Manga reaffirmed the GPF’s commitment to proactive, people-centered policing. He highlighted the legal consequences of offences such as rape, sexual harassment, assault, drug-related activities, and cybercrime. He also advised students to remain focused on their education, maintain discipline, and steer clear of criminal activities that could jeopardize their future.
The Gambia Police Force reiterated its dedication to safeguarding children’s rights and ensuring their protection through sustained community policing initiatives, particularly within schools across the country.
