Diaspora dialogues: President Barrow strengthens ties with Gambians in Ghana

In his continued efforts to engage with Gambians abroad, President Adama Barrow met with the Gambian community in Ghana on Monday during his visit.

The interactive session focused on addressing challenges faced by Gambians in the diaspora and reinforcing their ties with the homeland.

The meeting, held in Accra, provided a platform for members of the Gambian community to express their gratitude for the Barrow administration’s development projects while highlighting pressing concerns. These included difficulties related to rent, tuition fees, and the banking system, which have posed challenges for many Gambians living in Ghana.

President Barrow expressed his appreciation for the warm reception he received upon his arrival, acknowledging the efforts of the community in organizing the meeting. “I am grateful for the warm welcome I received at the airport and for the time you dedicated to meet with me,” he stated.

During the discussion, the President emphasized the need to uphold democratic values and adhere to the laws of their host country. “It is important to maintain our democratic values wherever we are and to respect the laws of the country we are residing in,” he said.

President Barrow pledged to address issues requiring immediate attention, particularly those that directly impact Gambians living abroad. He reassured the community of his administration’s commitment to supporting Gambians in the diaspora.

Key representatives in attendance included Muhammed Lamin Ceesay from the Student Union, Modou Jagne, Buba Dukureh from the National Association of Gambian Diaspora, and Babucarr Njie of the Regional Maritime University. Their active participation underscored the importance of collaboration between the government and diaspora organizations.
