Access to Information Commissioners Engage Higher Education Minister on Transparency Public Awareness

The Chairperson of the Access to Information Commission, Mrs. Neneh MacDouall-Gaye, led a delegation to meet with the Honourable Minister of Higher Education, Research, Science and Technology, Professor Pierre Gomez.

The delegation included Commissioners Mr. Emily Touray and Mr. Baboucarr Cham. They met with the Minister and his Permanent Secretary, Ambassador Jainaba Jagne.

The discussion focused on the role and mandate of the Commission under the Access to Information Act of 2021.

Minister Gomez welcomed the delegation. He described their visit as timely and necessary. He commended the Commission’s efforts to promote transparency. He stated that the government is committed to democracy, accountability, and good governance.

He emphasized that access to timely and accurate information is important. He warned that if information is not shared quickly, it can lead to speculation and chaos.

He encouraged the Commission to organize a nationwide sensitization campaign. He said the public should be informed about how to request information from public institutions.

Mrs. Neneh MacDouall-Gaye explained that the Access to Information Act was enacted in 2021. She said the Commission was established in 2024.

She disclosed that the Commission is finalizing official forms for information requests. These forms will be shared with relevant institutions. She announced that the ATI Commission has developed a sensitization plan. The plan includes using Radio, TV, and Traditional Communicators across the country.

Mr. Emily Touray spoke about proactive disclosure. He said making information readily available will reduce third-party requests.

He revealed that the ATI Commission is working with the Directorate of Information Services. They are developing a reporting template for institutions. The template will help streamline access to information. He added that the Central Policy Research Gambia (CPRG) has been engaged. The organization will conduct a baseline survey on the implementation of the Access to Information Act.

Mr. Baboucarr Cham highlighted the importance of active disclosure. He said it helps combat misinformation and disinformation.

He praised the Ministry for providing public information in a timely manner. He stated that the right to access information is fundamental. He added that ensuring timely disclosure strengthens public trust in government institutions.

The meeting ended with a commitment to enhance public awareness and access to official information. Both parties agreed that transparency strengthens accountability and good governance in The Gambia.
